MARUTI SUZUKI S-PRESSO VS RENAULT KWID

Welcome back to JHRider , In this article I am going to compair two entry level hatchbacks which are the Maruti Suzuki S Presso Vs the Renault Kwid. The first reason to compare that  both the cars come with SUV's styling. The second reason to compare is that both the cars comes in a similar price point and are provided with a 1.0 Ltr  petrol engine.
I will be comparing the cars on the following factors :-
  • Design
  • Engine
  • Features
  • Driving and Quality
  • Variant and Pricing
  • Conclusion
Before we head to the main comparison, Let's see a brief introduction of both the cars.

Introductions

Maruti Suzuki S Presso -

The Maruti Suzuki S Presso is based on the Future-S concept car which was showcased on Auto Expo 2018. But, the car was finally and officially launched on 30th September 2019. The Maruti Suzuki S presso comes with the trusted and reliable Maruti's K10 series 1 Ltr engine which also comes in famous cars such as Alto K10 and Wagon R.

Renault Kwid -

The Renault Kwid was also launched in September but in 2015. Then the car was priced extremely low but as generation proceeded with better safety, comfort features the prices also hicked. Recently in 2019 the Kwid BS4 was given a facelift which design is carried to the BS6 variant too.

Design Comparison

According to me both the car portray SUV styling but while Kwid shows a good looking funky styling on the other hand S Presso shows a basic plain styling. Although the S Presso was a lot criticised on the design and stylish aspects on social media , But we can clearly see that the S Presso effortlessly making into top 10 most sold cars every month. Although looks and design is a subjective matter which depends on person to person, So as I liked the Renault Kwid more than the Maruti Suzuki S Presso in the Design Comparison.
Both the cars draw inspiration from famous SUVs in the design department. As the Maruti Suzuki S Presso looks similar to the famous Mahindra Scorpio and Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, while Renault Kwid follows the new design language of SUVs such as Tata Harrier and Hyundai Venue.
S Presso looks a level up with the chrome inserts on the grill as well as rear and with the LED DRLs but for that you need to pay extra in accessories pack. But Renault Kwid comes with all the look enhancing elements with no extra cost.

Engine Comparison

Here are the specification comparison of both the cars :-
Here we can se that Renault Kwid has more power and torque by one unit than the Maruti Suzuki S Presso, yet the S Presso's K10 engine feels more silent, smooth and punchy when driven in practical conditions than Renault's 1 Ltr engine.
So, In engine comparison Renault Kwid wins on paper while on practical world S Presso wins it.

Features Comparison

In the features departments both the cars are loaded according to their segment. Maruti Suzuki S-presso gets 3 features which are not available in Kwid such as Steering Mounted Audio controls, Seatbelt Pre-tensioner with force limiters ( available as a option in S Presso with passenger airbag) and small utility storage space at rear. The Kwid gets many things which the S Presso doesn't gets such as LED DRL's ( S - Presso gets DRL's  but in accessories for which you need to pay more) , Rear Parking camera, Rear Arm Rest, Power Windows ( S-presso also gets power windows but only for front windows even in the top variants while Kwid gets all Power Windows in top variants), Rear 12v charging socket and USB fast charging at front ( S- presso also gets USB charger buy that doesn't supports fast charging), and more small things. Other features are common in both the cars such as :-
  • ABS
  • EBD
  • Air Bags ( Driver airbag is standard while passenger airbags are optional)
  • Reverse Parking Sensors
  • Immobilizer
  • Speed sensitive auto door lock
  • Touch screen infotainment ( 7 inch - S Presso and 8 inch -Kwid)
So, we can clearly see that Renault Kwid has more features compaired to S-presso which makes it a step ahead of S Presso.

Driving and Quality Comparison

As I mentioned in the Engine Comparison that on paper Kwid is more powerful but in real-life S-presso performs better. So the Driving also feels better in S-presso.
Both the car give nice driving experience such as the S-presso makes you feel that you are driving an real SUV and gives you a commanding driving experience where as Kwid makes you feel that you are close to ground and feels you that you are stick to ground.
Talking about quality, the interior cabin quality feels better in S-presso than the Kwid while the can't say about the exterior build quality as Kwid has just scored 1 star in Global NCAP while Maruti Suzuki S-presso is based on the heartect platform similar to cars such as Swift which also has poor safety ratings and built quality. So it's basically hard to say anything until we get a final score for S-presso.

Coming back to driving factor, S-presso performs better on off-road as the suspension is soft while Kwid is not so well in tackling off-roads. Although Kwid has 184 mm of ground clearance while S - Presso has 180mm of ground clearance. Talking about Cabin space, Maruti Suzuki S-presso has more space than Renault's Kwid, although Kwid provides ample amount of space, but for example 3 adults can sit quite comfortably in rear seat of S-presso compared to Kwid. Talking about boot space S-presso has a 270 litres of boot space while Kwid gets a bigger 279 litres of space. There are more factors such as the S-presso has smaller Length, Width while it is taller compared to Kwid which makes the presence of body roll more in S-presso.

Variant and Pricing Comparison

In this segment I will compare the Base variant and the top variants of both the cars to see which one offers best value for money.

Base Variants

Both the cars offer basic features in their base Variants such as Maruti Suzuki S- Presso standard variant and Renault Kwid Standard.
Both the cars in base Variants are basic as they don't offer audio entertainment system, power steering and not even any power windows and no Air-conditioning is available. Although there are no compromise on safety features both the cars get reverse parking sensors, ABS with EBD , Driver side airbag (passenger side airbags are available as an option). Immobilizer and more such as seat belt reminder. But here is a twist, the standard variant of Kwid is only available with 800cc engine while we out here are comparing the 1000cc option with S Presso so we have to compare the 1 Ltr RXT variant which offers features such as power windows, power steering as well as AC which the S-presso doesn't offer. Maruti Suzuki S-presso offers 13 inch steel wheels where Kwid offers 14 inch steel wheels in base variant
Considering this the pricing are as follows Renault Kwid 1 Ltr RXT variant is priced at Rs 4.42 Lakh ex-showroom New Delhi while S-presso Standard variant is priced at Rs 3.70 Lakh ex-showroom New Delhi.

Top variants

The top variants of the cars come with all the features and are offered with 14 inch wheels and both the cars have steel wheels but the wheel cover on Kwid looks like they are alloys which is missing in S-presso. The top variant of Kwid is Kwid Climber with Manual and Automatic transmission, similarly S-presso top variant is VXI+ which is available with Manual and AGS transmission.
Talking about pricing are as follows
The Renault Kwid Climber Manual transmission variant is available at Rs 4.63 Lakhs ex showroom New Delhi while the optional Variants is at Rs 4.71 Lakhs ex showroom New Delhi.
Renault Kwid Climber AMT variant is available at Rs 4.93 Lakhs ex showroom New Delhi while the optional Variant is available at Rs 5.01 Lakhs ex showroom New Delhi
S Presso Pricing as follows
Maruti Suzuki S Presso VXI+ Manual transmission variant is available at Rs 4.56 Lakhs ex showroom New Delhi .
Maruti Suzuki S Presso VXI+ AT variant is available at Rs 4.99 Lakhs ex showroom New Delhi.
So here above the pricing of the cars are shown and you can choose your desired Variant.

Conclusion

So here is the detailed information and comparison of both the cars, and the rest is your decision. There are few things which you should consider. If you live in a remote are or rural areas where the road are not quite good than, I will suggest you to go for S-presso over Kwid. As well as if you want a car which can be easily maintained than also you should consider S-presso.
Or if you consider features and looks over engine smoothness and performance than you can go with Kwid , as well as if you generally travel with just
3 to 4 people than Kwid would be a better choice than S- presso
Also Maruti Suzuki has almost the best service network over India than Renault which means you can find a dealership or service centre near to even any village.

Tip : -
If you are buying Kwid than don't forget to buy a oil sump protected which is a metal plate which will protect the oil sump which is made of plastic in Kwid.

If you are buying S-Presso than think twice before paying the accessories pack which is quite expensive for what they provide.

Before deciding to buy any one of these cars, I will suggest you to take a test drive to see which of these cars suits you , your lifestyle, your requirements.

Comment down which one you think is a good car ?
